Gareth Metcalfe: Building Problem Solvers and Developing Reasoning Routines

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! We have had a number of schools request the following two Professional Development opportunities:

Building Problem Solvers
Developing Reasoning Routines

The North West Learning Partnership is working in collaboration with Gareth Metcalfe – ‘I See Maths’ to bring you the following training programme starting in SEPTEMBER 2021.

Building Problem Solvers Professional Development

Overview

In this project, pairs of teachers from participating schools will develop the teaching of problem-solving in line with EEF guidance (point 3, solving problems). We will look at how to make problem-solving accessible for all children; we will consider the use of visual representations and worked examples to help children understand the deep structure of problems; participants will develop techniques for improving children’s meta-cognition and self-regulation when problem-solving. There will also be a focus on oracy, developing language that enables children to describe the process of problem-solving.

The project is comprised of four 2½ hour sessions. Every session will be attended by the maths leader and one other teacher, ideally with the two participants teaching in different phases of the school. Each session will be interactive, with participants actively involved in discussions, task design and sharing outcomes. There will also be a 1-hour online session at the end of the project with the maths leader where we will reflect on the outcomes from the project and each school will write an evaluation report.

Gap tasks will be set between each session. As an outcome from this project, each school will create their own policy for developing the teaching of problem-solving. Participants will plan and deliver CPD within their schools.

Building Problem-Solvers: Dates and times:
Session 1: Tuesday 21st September, 1:00pm – 3:30pm (online)
Session 2: Monday 8th November, 1:00pm – 3:30pm (online)
Session 3: Tuesday 25th January, 1:00pm – 3:30pm (in person)
Session 4: Tuesday 22nd March, 1:00pm – 3:30pm (in person)

Developing Reasoning Routines

Overview

In this project, pairs of teachers from participating schools will develop consistent methods for facilitating mathematical reasoning. We will explore how, by using consistent techniques and approaches to reasoning, children can develop ‘habits of mind’ that will help them to focus on spotting and explaining patterns and relationships. There will also be a focus on oracy and representations, enabling children to express their mathematical reasoning in different ways.

The project is comprised of four 2½ hour sessions. Every session will be attended by the maths leader and one other teacher, ideally with the two participants teaching in different phases of the school. Each session will be interactive, with participants actively involved in discussions, task design and sharing outcomes.

Gap tasks will be set between each session. As an outcome from this project, each school will create context-specific techniques for how reasoning is embedded within sequences of lessons. Participants will plan and deliver CPD within their schools. Sessions will take place half-termly.

Developing Reasoning Routines: Dates and times:

Session 1: Wednesday 22nd September, 1:00pm – 3:30pm (online)
Session 2: Tuesday 9th November, 1:00pm – 3:30pm (online)
Session 3: Wednesday 26th January, 1:00pm – 3:30pm (in person)
Session 4: Wednesday 23rd March, 1:00pm – 3:30pm (in person)

Each programme costs: £350 per school (NWLP discounts apply).

This is for 2 delegates to attend ALL sessions. this includes planning, preparation, and delivery. All materials will be provided.

About Gareth Metcalfe

Currently he is working in a range of schools, teaching classes from Nursery-Y6, helping schools to put reasoning and problem-solving at the heart of learning. I See Maths enables children to be intellectually and emotionally engaged by mathematics.
NCETM-accredited training events, led by Gareth, give teachers the knowledge, skills, and resources to deepen and personalise the mathematics curriculum. Training focuses on showing concepts visually, breaking learning down into small, purposefully sequenced steps and providing children with extended, challenging learning experiences.
I See Maths deepens children’s mathematical experiences. Resources and training make learning visual and deep, helping children to build understanding through a range of purposefully sequenced learning experiences. The I See Maths resources provide a range of opportunities for children to deepen their understanding, applying their skills flexibly in a range of contexts.

All materials will be sent out after the event to delegates that register and attend the zoom meeting.

Once registered with Paula Foster- paula.foster@three-saints.org.uk ‘zoom’ invites will be sent to the contact on the booking.
Please note Paula Foster does not work Friday’s.
Please copy Sarah Makin- sarah.makin@three-saints.org.uk into the booking if requesting a reply before Monday.
