Quality talk: improving provision for language and communication

Improving provision for Language and Communication and supporting children to make rapid progress in these strands is a key priority for many schools. We all recognise that the acquisition of spoken language and communication skills in early childhood builds strong foundations for reading, writing and mathematics in later life.
In this course, we will equip practitioners with detailed knowledge of the key milestones in early listening and attention, understanding, speaking and social communication.
Delegates will consider new ways to communicate and model language alongside children’s play; and explore the idea of learning pathways to address specific language needs and challenge you to think differently about early intervention programmes – discovering how to ensure that all children are exposed to quality talk within high quality continuous provision.

Benefits

Gain a deeper knowledge of the developmental stages of early talk

Strategies to help you create a language rich environment

Tools to help you lead and support others with improving provision for communication and language

Write from the Start

Guiding children’s mark making toward writing is a complex and skilful process. This half-day course will explore how teachers can support children to develop their early writing skills as they build on what young learners find meaningful as a gateway to becoming a confident and competent writer.
Practitioners will reflect on the building blocks of writing, exploring links between physical development, communication and language, creative development, vocabulary, phonics, reading and writing. Teachers and leaders will develop a clear understanding of the range of skills necessary to support children as writers and will be given a range of practical ideas to support children’s early literacy development.

Benefits
Focus on key skills that children need to acquire
Consider developmentally appropriate ways of assessing and evidencing children’s progress in writing
Draw inspiration from practical examples and case studies
